Types of Brushes for Curly Hair

There are a lot of brush types suitable for curly hair, such as wide-tooth combs, detangling brushes, and Denman brushes. Here's my thoughts....

Denman brush- These are a great starter brush. They're all over the internet BUT not my favorite for natural clumping. In-fact it seems like this is more work than it comes off. Majority of my clientele DOES NOT enjoy twisting each separate curl.

Wide tooth combs- I get it. We all just assumed the wide tooth comb was the ONE. I've found that it actually makes detangling harder. It also DOES NOT support brush styling at all. Since the teeth of the comb are further apart, these combs don't support product slippage. Which overall makes styling and detangling easier.

Detangling Brushes- These brushes should have a silicone or plastic teeth that are closer together. The bristles should help the water and product slip and work into the hair. Which will make natural curl clumps effortlessly.

How to Use Brushes Effectively on Curly Hair

Detangling Curls: While your hair is soaking wet , preferably with conditioner in, hold a section with tighter tension. Brush your curls from the ends upwards while your brush position is vertical with the section. Adding water should help the product move around easier which will help with detangling.

Styling Curls: For added texture while brush styling. After applying and brushing in a light layer of gel I like to split the hair into sections. From there, I will split the sections into even smaller sub sections and brush/scrunch into the desired look. Starting at the roots I'll over direct the brush away from the scalp for added volume.
